ZincSelect

Zinc is a mineral with strong tissue antioxidant properties and is needed for a robust immune system. Zinc plays an important role in the immune system, which may explain why it is helpful in protecting against colds. Zinc also plays a role in the regulation of appetite, taste and smell. It is essential for normal growth and development and for most aspects of reproduction in both males and females.

Zinc also has some antioxidant properties which means that it helps protect cells in the body from the potential damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet light, radiation, cigarette smoking and air pollution) can also increase the number of these damaging particles. Free radicals are believed to contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of health problems. Antioxidants such as zinc can neutralise free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they caused.

FAQ’s aboout ZincSelect

What is ZincSelect used for?
ZincSelect provides a combination of zinc together with other minerals (copper and manganese) to promote general health and well-being.

Why is zinc supplementation so important?
Zinc is an essential trace mineral that functions as part of about 300 different enzymes. As such, zinc plays a role in numerous biochemical pathways and physiological processes. More than 90% of the body’s zinc is stored in the bones (30%) and muscles (60%), but zinc is also found widely distributed in small amounts in virtually all body tissues.

The richest dietary sources of zinc are seafood (especially oysters), meat, fish, eggs, and poultry.

How do I know if I have a deficiency of zinc in my body?
Zinc deficiency can result in the following problems:
  • Loss of taste and smell
  • Fingernails become thin, and develop white spots
  • Acne
  • Delayed sexual maturation
  • Hair loss
  • Impaired night vision
  • Impotence
  • Recurrent infections
  • Memory loss
  • Prostate problems
  • Slow wound healing
What are the benefits of zinc?
Because of the varied roles of zinc in the body, claims for zinc-containing dietary supplements are numerous, including those for improved wound healing, general immune system support (including reduced severity and length of colds and upper respiratory tract infections), and support of various “male” aspects of health (supporting a healthy prostate gland, preventing benign prostatic hyperplasia, and increasing fertility via enhanced sperm production.

How does zinc supplementation benefit athletes?
Exercise performance has been associated with adequate zinc levels – especially in athletes who avoid red meat, eat high quantities of carbohydrates or follow an overly restricted dietary regime. Low zinc intake (below 3mg/day) has been linked to reduced activity of a zinc-containing enzyme in red blood cells called carbonic anhydrase (which helps red blood cells transport carbon dioxide from tissues to the lungs to be exhaled). Mild to moderate zinc deficiency can lead to significant reductions in the body’s ability to take up and use oxygen, remove carbon dioxide and generate energy during high intensity exercise.

What is acne and what causes it?
Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder and is characterized by pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads. Acne often arises at puberty, when the body’s production of androgens (male sex hormones) increases. These hormones stimulate the production of keratin (skin protein) and sebum (skin oil). If sebum is produced quicker than it can move through the pores, a blemish results. The excess oil allows for bacteria to become trapped inside.

How does zinc supplementation benefit acne?
Zinc is a key element in the oil-producing glands of the skin. Zinc also has anti-bacterial properties and aids in the healing of tissue and prevents scarring.

What is ZincSelect?
ZincSelect provides a bioavailable source of zinc together with copper. The copper is added because zinc supplementation has been shown to induce a deficiency of copper. Biosorb is added to further enhance the absorption of the minerals.

What do I need to be careful of when using ZincSelect?
Be sure not to take more than 30mg of zinc per day. Check your levels in a multivitamin and other supplements before using this product. When taking zinc it is important to supplement with additional copper – zinc interferes with copper absorption in the body (ZincSelect contains additional copper to prevent this deficiency).

If I am pregnant or breastfeeding can I use ZincSelect?
Use ZincSelect during pregnancy under the supervision of your healthcare practitioner.

Can children use ZincSelect?
Children over the age of 13 years should use half the recommended dose. Children under the age of 13 years should only use the product under the supervision of their healthcare practitioner.

Zinc is an extremely important nutrient for proper growth and development. It is an important supplement for all growing children.
