Ingredient Rationale:

Momordica charantia Extract (MC):
Momordica charantia extract is made from the fruits of the plant Momordica charantia, standardized to not less than 2.5% bitter principle.

It is postulated that momordica extract may exert direct insulin like action stimulating the release of insulin, thus lowering blood sugar levels. One isolate of MC, is charantin a mixture of steroidal glycosides and compares favourable with tolbutamide an oral hypoglycemic agent. Another isolate polypeptide P, when injected lowers blood sugar levels.

Thus, clinical studies have shown the utility of MC in lowering blood glucose. Further studies have shown MC may improve diabetes management in Type 2 diabetes.

Pterocarpus marsupium extract:
Pterocarpus marsupium is a plant whose wood is used in the treatment of diabetes. The heartwood (central part) has three important phenolic constituents – pterosupin, marsupin and pterostilbene. These exert hypoglycaemic activity.

The hypoglycemic activity has been evaluated in a multicentric open trial for Type – 2 diabetes. The extract exerted control over blood glucose levels in 12 weeks.

What is GlucoSelect used for?

GlucoSelect contains a combination of herbs with vanadium for the reduction of raised blood sugar levels. It can also be used by diabetics to assist with controlling blood sugar.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease condition in which the body does not produce enough insulin or the body cannot use the insulin properly. Insulin is the hormone which controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood and the rate at which glucose is absorbed from the blood to be stored as glycogen in the muscles or in the liver. Are there different types of diabetes?

Specifically, bitter melon contains the glycosides mormordin and charantin. Charantin is a hypoglycemic agent composed of mixed steroids and aids with Type 2 diabetes.

An insulin-like, hypoglycemic peptide “polypeptide-P” is present in bitter melon and is responsible for reducing blood sugar levels in people with Type 1 diabetes.

How can vanadium be of benefit for my diabetes?

There is evidence that high oral doses of vanadium can improve hepatic and peripheral insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes and reduce blood glucose levels.

Some evidence suggests that vanadium mimics the actions of insulin, possibly by causing phosphorylation of insulin receptor proteins.

Vanadium activates the receptor; stimulates glucose oxidation and transport; inhibits lipolysis in adipose tissue; stimulates glycogen synthesis in the liver; inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis; inhibits intestinal glucose transport; and increases glucose uptake, utilization, and glycogen synthesis in skeletal muscle. It therefore enhances the effects of insulin in Type 2 diabetes.
